myPerspectives® California English Language Arts for Grades 6–12

The core curriculum utilizes a student-centered design and a Gradual Release Instructional Model where the role of the teacher evolves from instructor to facilitator to advisor. Each unit is backward-mapped from culminating Performance Tasks and provides authentic, diverse texts that allow students to see themselves reflected in what they read.

• Whole-Class Learning: The teacher models effective, interactive experiences with rigorous anchor texts and text sets.
• Peer-Group Learning: Students work collaboratively in small teams to analyze informational and contemporary texts, with built-in options to select activities and decide how they will share their learning.
• Independent Learning: Students take ownership of their learning, choosing one or two texts from an array of four to five options for self-directed close reading and analysis.

Reading and writing are explicitly linked. With every selection, students analyze the text through the dual lens of a reader and a writer. Most writing assignments are text-dependent, requiring students to close-read complex selections, cite direct textual evidence, and construct short pieces, extended compositions, or multimedia presentations.

The curriculum uses a generative vocabulary approach. Instead of memorizing word lists, students systematically recycle, generate, apply, and synthesize academic vocabulary across oral instruction, listening tasks, close-reading questions, and writing. Explicit grammar and mechanics instruction is also integrated via conventions practice that springboards directly from sentences within the texts students are currently reading.

The programs utilize a comprehensive testing matrix:

• Formative: Activity-based checks, vocabulary/word study reviews, classroom observations, and Exit Tickets.
• Progress Monitoring: 10-question, auto-scored online Selection Tests, alongside diagnostic Beginning-of-Year and Mid-Year Tests used to plan targeted remediation.
• Summative: Unit Tests using fresh, authentic passages to test skill application, and End-of-Year Tests to assist with future placement.
